My name is Fatima
Washington. The Daddy Box is my story. I have never met my father who is
Moroccan but I look exactly like him. He left when I was only 6 weeks old. His
departure meant that I had to grow up alone in an African American family with
siblings and a mother that I barely resembled. In this film, I take you back to
Oakland, CA where I sort through the fragmented racial and cultural identity of
my childhood. Since I was a little girl, I have wondered, "who is my father?
Who is this man that gave me these North African features? Who am I?"
The Daddy Box documents my intense, personal search to find the father who linked me to a culture that he never stayed around to explain. I will take you from Oakland, CA to Casablanca, Morocco and finally to Atlanta, GA where we find my father living on a small boat, just outside Atlanta. My relentless search opens a Pandora's Box of questions about identity, revealing a profound search for self: self-love, self-acceptance and ultimately, my own personal identity. |
